Michael is actually doing very well. Once the respirator was removed, they put him on a respiratory support called a nasal c-pap (sp?). Since he did well with that, they actually downgraded his respiratory support requirements twice already, as he is doing so well. He's got a smaller nasal prong that is in his nose that provide him some pressure and oxygen, but its still a world away from the respirator. He must initiate each breath and must "remember" to breathe. He often forgets and the nurse needs to tap his side to remind him. Apparently, this apnea is quite common for premies, especially after long term respirator support.
The little guy is very strong. Stronger than expected and stronger than most babies his size. He can push your hand away and is already strong enough to get his way. Amazing.
He still has not had any food since Friday, so I am sure he is hungry. He's getting IV nutrition to ensure temporarily; the fear was that his reflux would complicate the respriatory progress, so that was eliminated by going to IV. Right now, we are thinking he'll start feeding again on Wednesday.....

Michael Jeffrey Pincus was born on February 18, 2007. He was born at 24 weeks at 1 pound, 4 ounces, 11 inches. He spent 149 days in the NICU. He was intubated for 3 months, therefore he has severe BPD (Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia) and he suffered severe hearing loss in both ears. On September 21, 2007 he received his first set of hearing aids. Other than that he is doing really really well for a 24-weeker!! Michael has been a fighter from the day he was born and this is his journal...

Well, Nathali! You had an eventful first Mother's Day! I'm so excited for you and Robert to see your son's face! That was a very memorable day for me, it was like I finally knew who my baby was! He looks like a wise little man! Congratulations to all of you! Love! Juli
