Today Dr. Z did the spinal tap, in order to test Michael for meningitis. The procedure went smoothly and only took about 5 minutes. The test results showed a high amount of white blood cells in his spinal fluid. Dr. Z said that since Michael has already been on antibiotics for 10 days, that its difficult to conclude whether Michael has meningitis or not, but that he'll treat him as if he does. This translates into 4 additional days on the antibiotics.
Michael's lungs are not any better and he still requires the mechanical ventilation. Still, next week is going to be a big week, because Dr. Z will start another dose of steroids to try to get Michael off the ventilator.
Michael looks good and is growing. Now he's got to show that he can work harder and breathe on his own. It sure would be a sweet Mother's Day gift if he is ready.

Michael Jeffrey Pincus was born on February 18, 2007. He was born at 24 weeks at 1 pound, 4 ounces, 11 inches. He spent 149 days in the NICU. He was intubated for 3 months, therefore he has severe BPD (Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia) and he suffered severe hearing loss in both ears. On September 21, 2007 he received his first set of hearing aids. Other than that he is doing really really well for a 24-weeker!! I have just found your blog and after reading your most recent post, it brought back so many memories of when my girl's were in NICU. My one twin also went through a spinal tap to rule out meningitis due to an infection that was not responding to antibiotics. The tests came back negative and I'm praying for you that Michael's tests show the same.
Congrats on getting to hold him for the first time. It is such a special moment. One that any mother of a preemie never forgets.
