Michael is 5 weeks old today. Unfortunately he didn’t have a good day yesterday. On Friday night his blood gasses came back bad and they kept getting worse during the course of the night. Saturday morning Dr. Adams took out his breathing tube and suctioned the trachea – there was a lot of milk in his trachea, which meant it was dripping into his lungs again. That is why his breathing wasn’t getting better lately. They put in a new breathing tube and took out the feeding tube. They stopped feeding him milk to make sure he doesn’t get any more milk into his lungs. Instead, they give him IV sustenance that basically is just for survival, not for growth and development.
On Monday they will put in a different feeding tube in that will bypass his stomach and deliver milk directly to his small intestine. This is to prevent him from spitting it up. He needs to get to 1000 grams (2 pounds, 2 ounces) in order for him to be strong enough to get over these breathing problems. We hope that after they put in the tube on Monday he will get to this weight within 2 – 3 weeks. The doctor made really clear yesterday that he is not ‘out of the woods’ yet. I saw him yesterday and he looked so still. He usually moves around much more. I guess he was really tired, they ‘worked’ on him for 3 hours non-stop. Poor thing!
The only funny thing was that they also put Michael on Reglan, which is the same medication as our dog and similar medication they are giving me.
Today he seemed to be doing a little better. He was very agitated this morning so they sedated him. Robert thought that he was probably hungry! He did look at me with both eyes. That just melts my heart! I just hope he is not in too much pain and that he won’t remember anything when he grows up.
Rae and Jules saw him again today and noticed a difference in size since they saw him 2 weeks ago. Even the nurse (Yanira) mentioned the difference (she was off last week).

I am so sorry to read that things aren't going very good right now with Michael. Just remember that it really is like a roller coaster. Keep strong!
So by what you are saying it sounds like they are going to do the nj tube. My son has a gj tube. I don't understand why Michael has been getting milk into his lungs...especially twice. This just shouldn't be happening. If he is refluxing it then they are giving him too much for his little body to handle. And Ashton STILL refluxes with his gj tube. This is not a guarantee to stop this! I hope that they are telling you all of this.
The whole 1000 grams thing also bothers me if they told you this. This is NOT true! Every baby is different and I sure hope that they aren't giving you average stats. Of course as he grows he will be gaining new lung tissue but to put a certain weight on breathing issues is not right for a doctor to do.
Reglan. Just make sure you watch him very closely with this med. It has a lot of serious side effects. I know many moms who had kids on this drug and had problems. You know Michael best, so if you feel something isn't right then you make sure you tell them.

Just wanted to second what Shannon said about statistics. Noah was on a ventilator with major breathing issues until well past 2.2 pounds. In fact, it was close to his due date before he finally came off it for good. Sorry to hear that Michael keeps aspirating his milk. Hopefully the new tube will make a difference. Hang in there!
